The Hotel

Situated in a quiet area just 250 metres away from the beach, the 4★ Hotel Royal Kenz in Port El Kantaoui has been a popular destination for Mr Bridge holidaymakers. In January 2014 the hotel came under the wing of new owners – Magic Life Hotels and several real improvements have been made to the hotel.

The Hotel Royal Kenz is in a great location, along a ribbon of sandy beach on Tunisia's Mediterranean coast. A taxi into Port El Kantaoui takes less than five minutes and if you want to explore a bit further, the city of Sousse and its ancient medina is but a 15-minute drive away.

At the hotel, you’ll find two swimming pools bordered by loungers and palms. There’s a spa here, too, which is dotted with softly-lit lanterns. Take your pick from treatments like an aromatic milk bath and a Berber clay wrap (payable extra).

On the food front, it’s a buffet set-up in the restaurant. Expect home favourites like cooked breakfasts, plus weekly themed nights where you can try dishes from around the globe. Then there are the à la carte eateries, which specialise in Tunisian and Italian cuisine.

The hotel had a revamp in summer 2014, and rooms come with an extra splash of colour and flat screen TVs. There is a new al fresco dining terrace attached to the main restaurant, too.

The purpose built bridge room can accommodate 25 tables. Recently renovated the bridge room is now air-conditioned (according to season) and sound equipment has been installed.

Choice of rooms (twin, double) all come with tea/coffee making facilities, private bath, toilet and balcony and single rooms are double for sole occupancy (supplement £5 per room per night). You can add a pool view supplement for £3 per person per night or a superior garden view room with bath robe, fruit basket and bottle on wine on arrival for £3 per person per night.

About Tunisia

Just 77 miles south-west of Sicily and two and a half hours flying time from the UK, Tunisia is a small North African country in the heart of the Mediterranean which is blessed with a stunning coastline, gorgeous sandy beaches, an abundance of historical sites and the magic of the Sahara desert. Whether you choose to simply relax, visit the sites, enjoy watersports, play golf, tennis and bowls, Tunisia is a year round holiday destination with something for everyone. A mix of African, Arabic and French cultures ensure you are in for a real treat and the natives are friendly and welcoming. Make Tunisia the holiday of your dreams this year and travel to one of the best value destinations in the Mediterranean - you won't regret it.

Today's travellers will find that tourism has developed alongside tradition. Modern hotels blend in with the area and purpose built resorts like Port El Kantaoui have been constructed on sites identified for their natural beauty, embracing rather than destroying local culture.

Tunisia Bridge

The events will encompass bridge seminars followed by the opportunity to play set hands with the assistance of the experienced team. There will be a range of different bridge sessions all played in a friendly atmosphere.

Programme to follow . . .

I moved from Manchester to the north-west as a child. All I ever wanted to do at school was to be able to speak fluent French. I don’t know why but I became a committed Francophile from the moment I fell in love with the beautiful, melodic language. After completing a Business Studies course with Modern Languages, I worked in Nimes in the South of France, loving the country, the people, the climate, the food (and wine!), the crazy driving, the laid-back Mediterranean way of life, as well as the language of course.

I came home eventually, met and married Andy, now my husband of 30 years, and moved to Lytham on the coast. I still return to France regularly to visit old friends and try to regain the fluency I once had.

My professional career was a project leader in IT. I took early retirement in 2014 to have more time to play bridge!

I first got interested in bridge in 2004. My only regret is not learning sooner. I went to an “introduction to bridge for beginners” session on a trans-Atlantic cruise. The bridge host, a lady from New York, fascinated me with her stories of teaching bridge in high-schools in the Bronx and Harlem. She maintained that she was giving them an insight into life skills: partnership understanding, being a team player, patience, tolerance, risk management, exercising caution, taking chances, dealing with defeat (and victory) graciously. The psychology of it all had me hooked at that first session so I enrolled on a course at my local club as soon as I got home and having been learning ever since. I qualified some years later as a Tournament Director, then as an EBU teacher but one thing I do know is that, the more I learn, the more I realise I don’t know. Bridge is a great leveller - the better players don’t always do well and the not-so-good players don’t always do badly.

I joined the Mr Bridge team in 2009 and assisted at several UK weekend events and on various cruises before becoming a lead host. Working with Bernard and the rest of the team is an enjoyable part of my bridge life, especially seeing the improvement in players.

Another love of my life is music. I sing in a choir and can confirm that it does have all the benefits it claims to have. Singing is great fun and the perfect antidote to serious bridge!

I still live in leafy Lytham with husband Andy and a very spoilt cat, Jelly.

Tunisia Things To Do

Away from the Bridge Table

The main emphasis of the holiday is certainly on bridge, but there is a lot more to it. There is of course Tunisia itself, an ancient country with plenty of history. There are also lots of opportunities to shop, tour and relax.

Tours

Around the bridge sessions, we build a programme of excursion opportunities. For example, you can visit Tunisia’s capital city, Tunis, the Bardo Museum, the Site of Carthage and the pretty hilltop village of Sidi Bou Said on a one full-day excursion. On another day, you may visit the Holy City of Kairouan and the Roman Coliseum of El Djem. You will also have the option of joining a 2-day mini safari to the Sahara Desert with overnight accommodation. All bookable in the resort.

Golf

Golf is available on the splendid 36-hole El Kantaoui Golf Course, located just two minutes away by taxi from your hotel. For bridge and golf enthusiasts this adds extra interest to your holiday.

Golf is charged at £49 per round or £219 for five rounds at the 36-hole El Kantaoui Course. Please indicate in the special request box if you would like to add this option and confirm your golf handicaps.
