The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, is a region of hidden delights, of golden beaches framed by limestone rocks, of small, simple restaurants with fresh fish.
In the east it’s as though time has stood still: the wave of mass tourism that washed over much of the Algarve has not touched this region, leaving a tranquil landscape of whitewashed villages and groves of cork and olive trees.
The wild, western Algarve, meanwhile, surrenders to the power of the Atlantic – it is all about nature, surfing and the sea.
This event will encompass bridge seminars followed by the opportunity to play set hands with the assistance of the experienced team. There will be duplicate bridge sessions every evening as well as some afternoon sessions fitting around the excursions, all played in a friendly atmosphere.
Programme to follow . . .
Sandy worked for the De Beers diamond group in personnel management for the last 16 years of her career. Having been invited to apply to become a magistrate, she was appointed to the Magistracy in 1985. Sandy gave up work in 1991 in order to spend more time sailing in the Mediterranean with her husband and sailing their boat across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
Sandy has played social bridge for 25 years and in 1995, after an amicable separation from her husband, she decided to set up a bridge club in the local yacht club in Port Solent near Portsmouth where she was living. Single people were encouraged to join and it was surprising how many widows and widowers attended on the first night who were delighted to be welcomed as a single player. Sandy is a member of EBUTA and has been teaching improvers' bridge for the past two years which she thoroughly enjoys. In May 2004 she was assessed suitable as a Club Director.
Graham and Sandy met 10 years ago sailing and soon discovered their passion for bridge. Graham is a retired naval officer and during his retirement has built several cruising catamarans of varying lengths. He has been a social bridge player for 40 years or so and is enjoying assisting Sandy with her Mr Bridge responsibilities.
As well as the bridge programme, there is time to relax by the pools or at the beach and there are a number of optional tours available.
The rich history of Faro, now the administrative centre of the Algarve region, includes occupation by the Romans and the Moors, ransacking by the Earl of Essex (during which time the great book collection of the Bishop of Faro was ‘relocated’ to Oxford’s Bodleian Library) and two city-wide architectural transformations following earthquakes in 1532 and 1755. Most of the grand buildings we see today date back to the 18th century, though echoes of earlier centuries remain. On this half day excursion, which includes a guided walking tour, the stones of Faro tell their fascinating story.
Half day • £39 per person
The ancient city of Silves was the former capital of the Algarve, reaching the height of its prominence and strategic importance during the Moorish occupation, but referred to as the ‘Kingdom of the Algarve’ as late as the 19th century. This half day excursion takes in the Moorish Castle and 13th century Cathedral of Silves, then the typical village of Monchique, set high in the hills, where there will be time at leisure to shop for traditional local handicrafts.
Half day • £39 per person
Adega do Cantor is Sir Cliff Richard’s spectacular property in Guia – he has loved the Algarve for 40 years and is very hands-on in producing his own range of wine, from grapes grown in the vineyard grounds. Our half day excursion includes a guided walking tour around the vineyards with an explanation of the winemaking process and a tour of the temperature controlled Adega where the grapes and the young wine matures in barrels. No visit would be complete without a tasting, of course, and we sample the (literally) house wine with local cheese, smoked ham and sausage. There will also be an opportunity to shop for Algarve souvenirs near Adega do Cantor as part of this excursion.
