Opening leads

edited 4:23AM in Bridge Laws
I was playing yesterday with two players I have never played with before. When playing their opening lead they would show the card and say Any Questions? In all the years of playing social bridge I have never come across this. Is it common practice and what is my response ?

If playing duplicate it has been common for about 40 years to lead face down so partner can ask questions if he wishes or say, as usually happens"no questions" It originally happened to stop the hand in the pass out seat asking lots of questions and indicating a lead when he had not the slightest intention of bidding.
Sounds as if your two opponents have missed the point a bit.
