VAT on village hall hire

Many Bridge Clubs play in village halls which themselves are usually a charity status. As a club we are not for profit, just covering our ongoing costs of hall hire and replacement of consumables plus annual prizes. We are charged extra on the hall hire for electricity and this cost plus hall hire is then subject to VAT at 25%.

Can anyone help with knowing if this VAT charge is correct or should it be just 5% on the electricity charge.

Not strictly Bridge but an issue because of playing bridge.

    Have had this problem with VAT being charged on halls owned by charity (YMCA in my case). Apparantly if the charity voluntarily registered to claim back VAT on their expenditure they have to charge VAT on rental. My organisation is a charity as well but we are not registered so we have to stand VAT and cannot claim it back. Some laws are daft!!
